Religion is like freedom. We cannot take it for granted...Unless men live by their faith, and practice that faith in their daily lives, religion cannot be a living force in the world today.
In 1951 Truman announced a new international religious campaign against communism. Political leaders of the era continued to hold the opinion that religion and family values were the core bulwarks in the fight against atheistic Communism and its assault on the West.
Twenty Dollar Bill with "In God We Trust", which was printed on all currency beginning in 1955. In 1956, the phrase was established as the United State's official motto.
F.B.I director J. Edgar Hoover, for example, regularly published articles in religious magazines during the 1950s. In 1962, he stated at a convention of the American Legion:
“There is a vast difference between Americanism and communism. One teaches morality; the other, expediency. One follows the law of God; the other, no law. One is founded upon spiritual values; the other, by ruthless, atheistic materialism. The communist world is a world of walls, searchlights, and guards – a prison for the heart, mind and soul”.
