Dianetics and Lie Detection

Dianetics and Science Fiction

L. Ron Hubbard was a pulp fiction writer when he founded Scientology in 1953. Dianetics, a new science of the mind, is the most remarkable link between Hubbard’s fiction and Scientology. The E-Meter, a diagnostic tool used for religious and therapeutic purposes, provides a connection to the arising occupation of state agencies with lie detection. Dianetics made its debut in a lengthy article by Hubbard in Astounding Science Fiction in May 1950. It focused on the metaphysical relations between the mind and the body and theorised that the human mind is compromised of two fundamental parts: the analytical mind and the reactive mind. The analytical mind is accurate, rational and logical -- a "flawless computer", while the reactive mind is a repository of memory traces which Hubbard refers to as "engrams".

Greed and Final Blackout

Greed, originally published in "Astounding Science Fiction," April 1950, is a story with the main premise that space cannot be explored or conquered without greed, since the desire to procure something is what makes planetary travel worthwhile. The story focuses on George Marquis Lorrilard, a sometime lieutenant in the United Continents Space Navy and space explorer, as he conquers an Asian-run planet.

Published in the April, May, and June 1940 editions of "Astounding Science Fiction," Final Blackout tells the story of Europe devasted by military action and plague after a series of world wars. Three hundred million civilians and thirty million soldiers are dead. An English lieutenant seizes control of England from the Communists and sets up a dictatorship in an effort to revive civilization.
