Legacy of the Attica Prison Riot

The Attica Riot, as a representative of the 1970s prison riots, has since worked as a signifier of injustice, protest, and the emancipation of oppressed people.

Even now, the Attica Prison Riots are invoked in manifold cultural articulations, ranging from pieces explicitly dealing with the riots (for example the movie Against the Wall in 1994), to the emergence of "Attica! Attica!" calls in totally different situations, and even in children's television:

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Saturday Night Fever  (1977)

House M.D., episode: “Lines in the Sand”, 2006

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, episode: "Those Were the Days," 1992
Spongebob Squarepants, episode: "Missing Identity," 2004
