Religious Revival and Campaigns Against Communism

Legislative Actions

In the early 1950s a number of legislative actions knit state and religion closer together.

  • The National Day of Prayer in 1952.

  • Adding “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. The addition was controversial in 1954 and has remained contested until this day, including a Supreme Court case as recently as 2004. The original, which was deemed no less patriotic, simply concluded "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" and can be heard in the Porky cartoon below:

  • The creation of “In God We Trust” postage stamps in 1954, which constituted the first explicit religious reference on a U.S. stamp

The "In God We Trust" postage stamp has endured. This example is from the 1990s.
