The Beginings of a Movement
The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis - a corresponding lesbian group - picketed Federal facilities in the early 1960s protesting the discriminatory policies enacted by the U.S. government. They used the African American Civil Rights movement as their model. Activists like Barbara Gittings organized a march on Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1965 – one of the first such marches in the country.
Daughters of Bilitis
These protests that spanned from 1957 all the way through the mid-1960s and paved the way for what followed -- the more famous Stonewall Riots in 1969. This more aggressive resistance to police oppression of LGBTQ citizens kicked off the modern LGBTQ movement and is celebrated every summer across the globe.
